Introducing Long Distance Triathlon

Following the triathlon format of swim-bike-run, long-distance events are usually held over double or triple the length of the standard races. Athletes must possess high levels of stamina and endurance, with races for the Elites lasting up to seven hours. One major difference between standard and long-distance events is that elite athletes are not allowed to draft on the bike, so many of the athletes come into the event from a strong cycling background.

The 2019 ITU Long Distance World Championships took place in Pontevedra, hometown of the Spanish legend Javier Gomez, as part of the ITU Multisport World Championship Festival. Gomez did indeed power his way to the men’s gold, Belgium’s Alexandra Tondeur winning the Elite women’s race. You can find the full results here.
